Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral Therapy, developed by Dr. John Upledger, is a gentle hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of the craniosacral system. CST works with your body’s own ability to heal and maintain balance.

Daily stresses, injury, disease and emotional trauma can accumulate overtime and diminish our body’s natural ability to self-correct. By addressing the underlying cause of the dysfunction, Craniosacral Therapy offers more than just symptomatic relief.

The craniosacral system is a physiological system comprised of the brain, the spinal cord, the membranes and fluid that surround them all. Similar to your respiratory or circulatory system, it produces its own rhythm that can be felt anywhere in the body. The rhythm is created by the ebb and flow of cerebrospinal fluid within the membranes. This rhythm is transmitted throughout the entire body via the fascia.

Using light touch, therapists are able to palpate the rhythm, feel for restrictions in the fascia and assist the body in releasing them. Due to the fascial web of the body, the root restriction may not be where the symptoms are manifesting. For example, an old knee injury could be the cause of an imbalance in the pelvis, leading to low back pain or even headaches.

Emotions can have a similar impact on the body’s ability to self-correct and release the residual effects of trauma. Overtime a build up of emotional restrictions can manifest as a physical or emotional limitation. Chronic headaches, TMJ Dysfunction and depression are some of the more common complaints that may have an emotional cause.

A Craniosacral Therapist treats the person as a whole and works with the body’s ability to repair itself on all levels.
